One of the beautiful things about flamenco is that it is open to everyone regardless of age, nationality, gender, body size, or bone structure. If you have the drive and the passion, you can learn it. Flamenco welcomes dancers of all shapes, sizes, and ages. In fact, it is the popular belief that flamenco gets better with age. The traditional view is that it takes an older dancer to have the emotional maturity to deliver an authentic performance. Flamencos call this duende.
Duende is the soul of flamenco. When we age, we have life experiences to tell. This class guides you to tell your story through movement, song and dance using the mystical language of Flamenco. No Experience Necessary!
About the Instructor:
Angelina Ramirez began studying Flamenco at the age of nine with Olivia Rojo in Tucson, Arizona. She continued her studies at the National Institute of Flamenco Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico studying with Eva Encinias, Joaquin Encinias, Omyara Amaya and Marisol Encinias. Angelina became an original member of Yjastros, the American Flamenco Repertory Company. Upon returning to Arizona, Angelina founded Flamenco Por La Vida. In 2012, Angelina along with collaborators Monica Robles and Ruben Gonzalez, opened 5th Row Dance Studios. Angelina along with FPLV partner Olivia Rojas present two festivals in the Phoenix Community: Lluvia Flamenca in collaboration with Stateside Presents and The Phoenix Festival de España with The Phoenix Center for the Arts. During the 2014-15 season and 2017, Angelina toured with world-renowned, New York based company Noche Flamenca in their production of Antigona. Angelina and her company Flamenco Por La Vida were awarded the 2014 Phoenix Mayors Arts Award for Best Dance Organization and in 2016 was a nominee for a Governor's Arts award in the individual artists category. Angelina was a teaching artists for the inaugural Creative Aging Institute and was selected to attend the annual National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Leadership Institute.
