Intaglio (meaning "in the groove" in Italian) is a historic printmaking process mastered by Renaissance artists, where a design is scratched or etched onto a metal plate. Using a pointed stylus called an etching needle, students will draw their designs onto a plate, then produce a series of prints using a traditional printing press. Students will get familiar with the process by using the direct drypoint technique on clear polycarbonate plates, then take their art to the next level by acid-etching their drawings onto copper plates. Previous printmaking experience is recommended, but enthusiastic beginners are also welcome!
