Public Places/Personal Spaces
January 25 – May 26, 2008
Public Places/Personal Spaces is a selection of artwork from Mesa Contemporary Arts Permanent Collection. The work speaks of special spaces that seem to offer a sense of privacy, secrecy, enclosure, protection, a sense of home or even intimacy. Public places as well as more private spaces may allow a physical or mental retreat through anonymity. Phrases like “One of many” and “Safety in numbers” are well-known in our culture. Even a memory may grant escape from the place and time where one’s body physically exists. A mental retreat to a favorite location can offer comfort and peace, even when physical escape is not possible. This collection includes Jackie Sue Alpers, Microphone, 2001, a Cibachrome photograph. Alpers work focuses on the personal habits, rituals, and beliefs that people use to protect themselves and the ones they love. Also in the collection is a mixed media sculpture, Under Pressure, 2001, by Robbie Barber. In Barber’s words: “These sculptures specifically deal with the vernacular architecture of the American landscape as I see it; a landscape filled with working class habitats, a strong visual character and sense of history.” More than 20 pieces make up Public Places/Personal Spaces. .
