Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are there age requirements for classes?

A. Yes, we follow a strict policy of abiding by the age limits for most classes listed in our class catalog. This is based on many years of experience that tells the class as a whole functions better with students of similar ages. We do offer specific intergenerational classes that include mixed ages, so please consult our class catalog for more information.

Q. My child is advanced for their age, or has taken similar classes before. Can they be put in a class with older children?

A. Unfortunately, no. We abide by our age limit policy for the benefit of everybody in the class.

Q. I missed the first class of the session. Is it okay for me to just start with the second week of class?

A. In most instances, you MUST attend the first class session to receive handouts, safety information, safety demonstrations, and a list of required supplies. And many times the class starts working on a project on the first day. Students who miss the first class and start with the second class create an extra demand on the instructor's time, and this is unfair to other students. However, this policy is variable depending upon the class and the instructor; the instructor has flexibility to accommodate only if they feel it is appropriate.

Q. I missed a couple of classes when I went on vacation (or was sick, etc.). Can I get a refund, or take make-up classes?

A. We do not refund for missed classes, unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Generally, class sessions include a "make-up week" that provides an additional class if the instructor is out sick or otherwise misses a class.

Q. I can't afford the cost of this class, but I really want to participate in the arts. Is there financial help for me?

A. Yes. The City of Mesa offers a Fee Assistance Program that is available for selected programs and activities to those individuals or families who may qualify for free or reduced school lunch, or federal subsidy programs. You must be a City of Mesa resident and provide written proof of income to qualify. Eligibility must be proven prior to registering for a class.

Q. What is your refund policy?

A. We will refund 100% of your class cost if you cancel within one week of the first class meeting. Refunds will be processed either through credit card or by check. If a refund is less than $20, the credit will be applied to the registrant's household account and can be used for future registrations or reservations with the Mesa Arts and Cultural Division (which includes the Mesa Arts Center).

Q. How can I get into a class that is already full?

A. Class maximums are listed in our class brochure, and it is rare that we exceed the maximum due to space constraints. Additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list, on a first-come, first-served basis, to be added to a full class only if someone else cancels out.

Q. I'm on a waiting list for a class I really want to take. Should I call and check my status?

A. Calling us is not necessary, as registration staff keeps track of waiting lists and will call you immediately if a place becomes available.

Q. I'm a single parent. Can I bring my child to class with me?

A. Unfortunately, no. Due to safety concerns and the comfort of our other students, we do not allow children to accompany parents in classes.

Q. As a parent, I'm very interested in my child's development and safety in Arts Center classes. Can I attend their class to observe?

A. We've found that young children are easily distracted when parents are in the room with them, and the nature of creating art means that the child must be free to use their imagination unhindered by outside influences. So, we do not allow parents into children's classes, unless the class is structured as a parent-child intergenerational class. Our safety record is exemplary, and all of our instructors are fingerprinted and pass a background check before they are allowed to teach at the Center.

Q. I just need a 1/2-hour to finish my project at the end of the class session. Can I get into the studio after hours?

A. No. Due to safety and liability concerns, access to studios is available to students only during posted class dates/times, and with an instructor present. You can register for an open studio or independent study class to work on individual projects.

Q. I have a studio in my home. Can I bring work to the Arts Center and finish it there?

A. No, because of space constraints and the need to accommodate and safely handle all student work, you are not allowed to bring work from home.

Q. What's the surest way to register and make sure I get the class I want?

A. Please know that there is a strong demand for our arts classes, and more people register than we can accommodate. Your best bet is to use either WebTrac, or TeleTrac as this guarantees admission if there is space still available. We do accept walk-up and phone registration, but WebTrac and TeleTrac take precedence and occur instantly.
