A Docent is a teacher, serving MCA and the community in the field of art education. Docents are considered key MCA volunteers. The primary roles of a Docent are to serve as a host of the MCA to provide a welcoming atmosphere, serve as interpreters and tour guides helping to provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artwork, assist in preserving the collections by providing auxiliary security in the gallery, and prepare background information on the works of art in the collection.

Duties include: greet MCA visitors upon arrival and via phone, provide general campus directions and exhibit information, and answer questions and provide friendly customer service to all patrons in-person and via phone.

Usher, Performing Live (Theaters)

The Usher Program is the Center's largest volunteer program. The purpose of the Usher program is to enhance public service and improve operations at all Mesa Arts Center theater productions. 20 to 50 ushers are needed for each performance. The Ushers work in the front-of-house for all theater productions. The primary roles of an usher are to greet the patrons, assist patrons to the theaters and to the correct seating location, scan tickets, hand out performance programs, and assist with emergency procedures as necessary. Ushers are encouraged to volunteer for a minimum of 1 performance per month. All volunteers must attend new Usher orientation prior to entering the program. All active Ushers are required to attend Front of House emergency procedure and customer service training annually.

Instructors Aide, Art Studios
The Instructors Aides provide support to Mesa Arts Center art instructors and improve the students' classroom experience. The Aides assist students with projects, help with set-up and clean up of classrooms, provide administrative support and answer student questions. Most instructors prefer that the volunteer is knowledgeable in the art that is being taught (ceramics, metals, lapidary, etc). Time commitments are dependent upon class schedules. Most classes run 8-13 weeks in duration and there are three sessions per year.

The Technical Aide must have the ability to walk and stand for long periods of time and be able to bend and lift with ease.

An administrative background is preferred, as the volunteer will be working with computers on a regular basis. The Volunteer Office is staffed by an administrative volunteer on a daily basis.
