Recently I have found it easy to get caught up in negativity in the news and social media. I feel bombarded by polarizing opinions, that often divide the local community, our country, and ultimately, the world. Feeling as though it was impossible to escape the noise, I began to yearn for deeper human connection – social, economic and political opinions aside.
I was thrown into Creative Catalysts for a community partner project through ASU. While my classmates chose to clean kennels at the local animal shelter or sort clothing donations at a church, I chose to sit down and connect with the people around me while learning to do and create something new.
My experiences with Creative Catalysts range from painting beer koozies with a hilarious older couple who kept confusing their names to creating floral crafts with kids. And with both experiences, we all enjoyed the joy of creativity and connecting with each other. I thoroughly enjoy time spent with people I meet through Creative Catalysts, and it has instilled a new kind of hunger within me.
While watching Rick and Morty for the 187th time, I realized my unproductivity. I thought, “this time to myself is nice, but I think it would feel better to use this time in a more positive way.” Feeling inspired by working with Creative Catalysts, I immediately thought of getting more involved with the special needs community. By posting a simple Facebook post, I was quickly connected to an amazing Down Syndrome Achievement Center seeking new volunteers.
I am excited to continue my work with Creative Catalysts, as it enables me to realize my passions. And I encourage you to think about how your free time could be used to put a little good into the world.
Creative people make better employees. Yes, that statement might initially appear bold, maybe even a little presumptuous
