Jazz from A to Z
A partnership between Mesa Arts Center, ASU Public History, Mesa Public Schools and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz from A to Z creates a meaningful connection to one of America’s greatest cultural resources- jazz.  Taking a note from the qualities of jazz, and using the National Endowment for the Arts – Jazz Curriculum as a guide, this program provides opportunities for students and educators to improvise, analyze, synthesize, engage in group collaboration, develop an 'individual voice', and broaden cultural perspectives. Workshops and classes are complemented by free tickets for students and educators to attend live performances by the Lincoln Center in the Ikeda Theatre.

Sponsored in part by the Boeing Foundation.

The United States has as many people over the age of 65 as there are under the age of 20. Studies demonstrate arts participants have better health, fewer doctor visits, less medication usage, and increased activity and social engagement. The Creative Aging program seeks to uplift individual creative expression for older adults.  Through artist in residence programs in adult resource centers, adult day cares and adult living communities, important issues are explored through movement, story, dance and engagement in art making as a tool in expression.

Basic Arts – Lowell Elementary School
Basic Arts is an artist in residence program at Lowell Elementary School, designed to activate literature through live theatre experiences. Students attend Performing Live for Students theatre productions, paired with a complementary piece of literature.  Teaching Artists in pre and post visits work with students and educators by creating, performing, analyzing and critiquing dramatic works. Students individually and collaboratively explore, discover and define understandings and global perspectives.

“The vocabulary and discussion that evolved from seeing the play and making comparisons to the book were magical, and something that every teacher loves to see in her students. Thank you for this opportunity!”-- M. Fossler, 5th Grade Teacher

Culture Connect: Understanding Each Other’s Roots and Finding a Voice to Celebrate Our Own

Interested schools should contact us at 480-644-6609, or email outreach@mesaartscenter.com.

Sponsored in part by Walmart.

Culture Connect provides select area schools free student tickets for Mesa Arts Center cultural performances, complemented by pre and post artist in residence activities.  Students explore culture through participatory activities, workshops, literature, and live artist demonstrations. Teachers utilize arts and culture to teach diversity, tolerance and empathy through the arts.  Through the power of shared experiences students see differences as strengths, build self awareness and see their fellow students as having emerged from a rich cultural history, full of stories and traditions expressed through music, art, dance and theater.
