Giants, and music, and art. Oh my!

by Turiya Chavez | May 7, 2018

Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum will welcome their summer exhibitions on Friday, May 11 from 7-10PM with a free reception. This event will feature Fantastic Planet, a large-scale illuminated humanoid installation created by Australian artist Amanda Parer. These otherworldly beings are taking over downtown Mesa for ten days, May 4-13. The reception event will celebrate the new summer art exhibitions which will be up through August 2018. Not to mention- this is all FREE! The reception will bring live music by the Jaime Cortez Band, exhibiting artists will be in attendance, and there will be refreshments and a cash bar.

Aside from the giant, glowing figures, one should not miss the opportunity to be amongst the first to view the new round of exhibitions from renowned artists such as Patti Warashina, Rachel Bess, Marilyn Szabo and Colin Chillag. Warashina is presenting work from her Transitory Conversations exhibition and will also be giving a free artist lecture the following day, May 12 from 6:30PM-7:30PM. Bess is presenting Adventure and Control, a collection of dark and intimate portraits, and Chillag will be presenting It Is Important to Be Nobody, featuring complex paintings that fuse hyperrealism and abstraction. Both artists are from Arizona. Szabo, also an Arizona resident, is presenting Life & Death Portraits and will be hosting a meaningful portrait workshop on Saturday, April 21 from 9AM-5PM. We the People, a curated exhibition, highlights exceptional figurative artists who capture an aspect of the American experience.
