There is give and take between the artist and audience during a performance but nothing can replace the powerful feedback of a direct question or comment. Pre-show lectures enhance an audience's experience of a work. Post-show lectures and question & answer sessions give audience members the opportunity to tell the artist directly how much they enjoyed a work or ask questions to help them better understand it.
