Mesa Takes Flight Festival

The Mesa Takes Flight Festival is the City of Mesa’s festival commemorating the Arizona Centennial and culminating a year-long celebration of aviation, aerospace and all things flight-related. 

 

The festival will take place at the Mesa Arts Center, with select offerings on Friday evening, February 10, from 6-10pm, in conjunction with Second Friday in Downtown Mesa, and a full range of activities on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and on Sunday from noon to 4pm. 

 

Mesa Takes Flight Festival features include:

 

On Friday night (along with selected festival programs):

  • Blue Bike Kids Show presents the Hall of Aviation, an interactive show that uses projection technology to place the participant “flying” on the walls of nearby buildings, with performance interludes highlighting key moments in aviation history. 

 

On Saturday:

  • Mesa Public Schools will host a Paper Airplane Competition on Saturday with multiple competition categories (bring a plane or learn to build one at the festival!).
  • Mesa Public Schools Choral Concert
  • An original play about the Wright Brothers, written by a former Mesa Public Schools’ teacher, Kathie McMahon, will be performed by MPS students in the Dobson Lecture Hall.

 

On Sunday:

  • Building Bonanza will lead flight-based Lego building projects on Sunday.

 

On Saturday and Sunday:

  • A large-scale Community Dance Performance on Flight will be performed in the Center’s Shadow Walk, choreographed by Elizabeth Johnson.
  • Blue Bike Kids Show presents Flight-O-Vation, an original live performance by designed to engage young people in the innovation of flight and to learn about the history of aviation, including Mesa's pivotal role in flight.
  • Mesa Public Schools’ Space Integration Module and Flight Activity Center welcome would-be pilots and space explorers both young and old. 
  • Mobile Game Truck will offer a variety of flight-oriented games, free of charge!
  • Aviation- and Flight-related Exhibits, Talks and Demos
  • Hands-on Art Activities
