Let Art Disrupt You

by Joanna Guevara | July 11, 2018

I was once asked if art was always disruptive. To give the conversation more context, it was graduate school and my professor posed the question, “Is arts entrepreneurship always disruptive?” This question is something I am still thinking about now, but under new conditions.

Pulling away from the business side of the conversation, I’ve started to ask myself, “Is art always disruptive?” I don’t just mean the art that dedicated artists produce to highlight the challenges of today. I’m not referencing what we would traditionally call “art.” When I ask the question, I’m really asking if the small creative things I do are disruptive. Am I a disruptor?

I believe that I am. I’m by no means an artist. I hesitantly call myself creative. I like drawing stick figures. I enjoy painting-by-numbers. I occasionally write poems, or write inspirational sayings on paper in my beautiful (yet not exactly it) attempt at calligraphy. I sing. I dance. I play piano. Some might call me an artist. But I simply allow myself to just do artsy things because I believe it can heal a soul. I believe it can disrupt the norm of my day and give me something to think about. Disruption doesn’t have to be bad or shaking down the earth. It doesn’t have to turn the economic market on its heel. It is something that sets things a little off kilter. Art always can do that. Whether that art be making fun projects at a Creative Catalysts brunch, or writing a poem at the WordPlay Cafe writing workshop, or even just singing at home. Art does something. It calms a soul. It makes you laugh. It helps you heal. It disrupts a pattern and starts a new one.

I encourage you, whether artist, creative, or none of the above, to take time this month and let art disrupt your life a little. Come join us at a Creative Catalysts event and help us disrupt our patterns with your artistic presence.
