Learn the tama hagane process to make your own patterned steel. Take iron that you gather, under high heat add carbon to the iron melting together to form an ingot. Follow up with repeated folding and pressing.
Students will gather their own black sand from the desert landscape for their own custom made steel on a field trip with instructor Saturday, January 15.
Students will learn how to shape the steel into billets or blades.
Projects will be finished with a final etching treatment revealing the beauty of the multi-layer pattern unique to this process.
Six student maximum.
