Glass Studio Instructors

We have added three new experienced and motivated instructors to our staff, for a total of seven glass instructors. Our faculty includes:

Laurie Nessel,Lead Glass Instructor
laurienessel@gmail.com

Head of the Glass Studio, Ms. Nessel was drawn to Dan Dailey's glassblowing class at Haystack-Hinckley School of Crafts in 1972. She studied glass blowing under Robert Coleman, and continued her hot glass studies at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 1975-78 under Doug Johnson where she received her B.S. degree. She has been a self-taught stained glass artist since 1977, and has made a living at it since 1983, operating Gecko Glass in Tempe. Ms. Nessel has taught lampworking, fusing and stained glass at the Mesa Arts Center since 1998. Her public art commission for the Tempe Historical Museum was featured in Glass Art Magazine's Jan/Feb 1996 issue.

Lucille (Lucy) Enos, Glass Instructor

Ms. Enos graduated from Bennett College with honors in Drawing and Painting and went on to study for two years at the Art Student's League and the New School of Social Research. She studied Jewelry and Silver-smithing at the University of Minnesota and Anthropology at Arizona State University. She has been creating innovative art glass since 1960, applying multiple techniques including fusing, slumping, metals and casting. She has private, commercial and ecclesiastic commissions in four states, and her work includes the state seal at the Phoenix National Guard headquarters; the chapel at Mesa Lutheran Hospital; and several panels at the Mesa Southwest Museum, Mi Amigo's restaurants, Brown Baptist Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church. She has taught at the Shemer Art Center in Phoenix, AZ and Mesa Community College, and owned Enos Stained Glass, a retail and teaching studio in Mesa, for more than twenty years.

Dolly Ahles, Glass Instructor

Ms. Ahles has been making lampworked beads since 1997. She has written articles and reviews for Lapidary Journal magazine, and her beads have been shown in Lark Books' 500 Glass Beads and Jim Kervin's All You Ever Want to Know About Making Beads. She is Southwest Regional director of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, in addition to being a member of the Arizona Society of Glass Beadmakers. She enjoys teaching beginning bead making and sharing the enthusiasm of her students as they explore the art. Her teaching approach is based on safety first, and lesson plans build on the learned knowledge of the previous lesson.

Paul Blasi Paul Blasi, Glass Instructor

Working with borosilicate glass since 1996, Blasi began his self-taught exploration in lampworking in Boulder, Colorado. An Arizona resident since 1998, Paul has taken numerous classes and workshops, and has been an instructor at Cave Creek Glassworks, as well as teaching privately. He currently supplies galleries around Arizona with his glass art, including the Sedona Arts Center, the Jerome Co-operative Gallery, and Flagstaff's Arizona Handmade Gallery. Colorful perfume bottles, jewelry and sculptural pieces make up the majority of his line. Examples of his work can be seen at www.blasiglassdesigns.com.

James Lynch James Lynch, Glass Instructor

At the early age of 17, Lynch discovered lampworking in Albuquerque, struggling with a few tubes of glass and a small propane bottle in his garage. In 1998 he relocated to Boulder, Colorado for an apprenticeship at Diablo Glass Studios, working with artist Steve Sizelove. After his apprenticeship, he moved to West Virginia and received mentorship from artist Genny Zback. During this time, Lynch played an important role in the opening of "The Gallery" at the Seneca Glass Factory. In 2002, he relocated to Albuquerque, where his work received first and third place in the New Mexico State Fair Fine Arts Exhibit. Currently, he resides in Chandler, AZ, where he is the owner of I Blew It Glassworks, and is a member of the Glass Art Society. His work can be viewed at www.iblewitglassworks.com.

Rob Traylor, Glass Instructor

Mr. Traylor is a Mesa native, but has also lived in Oregon and Colorado over the past eight years. He learned lampworking under Eli Aller at Sunset Glassworks and studied fusing fundamentals from Gil Reynolds. In Oregon, he became a part of Hot Glass Horizons, and took classes from such pioneers of fusing as Patty Grey, Michael Dupille, and Newy Fagan. He also worked as an assistant to Dave Kendall of Kendall Artglass, where he learned how to work in a hot shop, but has also become very proficient in coldworking. His work has been featured at the Crested Butte Colorado Center for the Arts and in the Gallery of Excellence at the Glass Craft Expo in Las Vegas. He currently lives in Chandler, where he has his own studio, and is a member of the Art Glass Association. His works can currently be seen at the Symphony of Light Gallery in Scottsdale.
